Big Basin Redwoods State Park – Saratoga
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Big Basin Redwoods State Park – Saratoga
Try to not be overwhelmed by the majestic redwoods. This 15,000-acre park is home to campers and hikers as much as mountain bikers. The ride through Big Basin Redwoods State Park is along wide fire roads with some bumps but no technically difficult sections. The density of the redwoods offer shades for those sweltering rides on hotter days.

Camp Tamarancho – Marin, California
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Camp Tamarancho – Marin, California
This trail is the mix of technical and flow. Dense vegetation lines this singletrack, rock gardens and a few jumps as well. There is a bit of a climb at the beginning but you'll enjoy a majority of the ride downhill, at a brisk pace. It's a great ride. The only downside is that you'll have to buy a day pass to ride it.

Mckenzie River Trail – EuGene, Oregon
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Mckenzie River Trail – EuGene, Oregon
The first ten miles are the roughest part of this trail, as you ride through a lava field. The rest of the trail winds through a forest and around waterfalls, bridges and some ponds, making this trail a beauty to ride as well as see. Take time to enjoy the scenery. The difficulty of this trail is due mostly to length, not climbing.

Forest of Nisene Marks/Sand Point Overlook – Santa Cruz
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Forest of Nisene Marks/Sand Point Overlook – Santa Cruz
Shaped by the fault lines that bisect this beautiful terrain, this landmark is a popular attraction for mountain bikers and hikers. What about the sights? Along the trails you’ll find plenty of narrow canyons and winding ridges. The rugged area has barely been changed from it’s original state.

Snow Summit Mountain Resort Trail – Big Bear Lake
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Snow Summit Mountain Resort Trail – Big Bear Lake
On the whole, we can sum this singletrack up in three words: steep, loose, and rocky. You will find that the easiest portions of this track are the gravel roads, or outside the resort, around Pine Knot Trail. There are a few jumps and drops that have been built with the help of fallen trees, and if you’re looking for an A-line style trail with berms and table tops, Snow Summit doesn’t have it. But if you’re looking for a workout and a challenge, check out this steep trail.

Downieville Downhill – Downieville, California
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Downieville Downhill – Downieville, California
Magazines call this an “epic” singletrack downhill. One of the best on the West coast. It’s all true. But be warned: this one is for advanced riders. As a single track for the majority of the ride, there is steep technical at the top of the track with creek crossings, waterfalls, swimming holes, and long suspension bridges. This track will test your skills so bring your A-game.

Here’s the hidden gem on this list. Everybody knows about Whistler and the North Shore, but the mountain biking deep inland, around Banff and Canmore, is equally worthy. More kilometers of pristine singletrack than you thought possible await in the most dramatic scenery on the continent.

American River Bike Trail – Sacramento
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - American River Bike Trail – Sacramento
This 32-mile beauty stretches from downtown Sacramento eastward to Folsom Dam. What we love about this trail is that it is almost completely separated from vehicle roads. The American River serves as a beautiful companion, rising in elevation to 450 feet as you ride from west to east. It’s beautifully maintained, mile markers are posted, and there are many entry points.

Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland CA
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland CA
This is considered the best singletrack in the East Bay. The park is only less than a square mile, but there are enough trails to ride around for several miles. Even better, trails range from easy, smooth trails to technical heavy singletracks with roots, rocks, and drops. Take a map and enjoy all this park has to offer! We love our home city of San Francisco, and as we expand we do our best to experience all the beautiful state of California has to offer. If you get some time, venture out with some friends and some bikes, and hit the trails.

Purisima Creek Grand Loop - Redwood City, CA
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Purisima Creek Grand Loop - Redwood City, CA
This is a close competitor for the singletrack with the best scenery in the Bay Area. This trail has it all, ocean views, close contact with huge redwoods, fern canyons and creeks. It is also one the the best flowing singletracks - you'll feel like a Jedi flying between the redwoods. It's not very technical, with climbs mainly in the shade and on fire road. Cruising through a redwood forest canopy that creates it's own micro-climate is pretty intense!

Romero Loop - Santa Barbara, CA
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Romero Loop - Santa Barbara, CA
Big mountains tumbling head over heels into the sea. There are few places in the world that have this setting; Santa Barbara is one of them. Looking up from town you'll see the Santa Ynez mountains rising steeply. You'll also be looking at Romero Canyon and one of the better mountain bike rides in the area.

Four mile travel management area
Reasons to Mountain Bike in the USA - Four mile travel management area
Amazing views await, in this large region comprising BLM, Forest Service and state lands, catering to all manner of visitors, such as four-wheelers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. It can get a bit overrun, but it's so big you can often find yourself a secluded area of your own, perfect for camping, contemplating and wildlife watching. It's especially good during the low season.
